Tall Buildings

The Landmark Tower is being designed by Cesar Pelli Architects with multidisciplinary engineering design by Buro Happold.  Chris Bakkala initiated conceptual design of the tower structure in Buro Happold's Dublin office, culminating in a presentation to the municipality. Buro Happold offices in England and the Middle East took over design development to tender and construction phases.

Chris Bakkala developed initial design criteria and concepts for the structural frame in the first 30 days of what is now the third year of project development. The frame design has moved on with detailed design development but the proportions of the building have not required change and main member sizes still reflect the proportions determined during that initial 30 day period. At tender stage check, material quantities were within 10% of the initial concept material quantities.

The point of getting concepts right at the early stages is to allow design proportions to be reasonably fixed to permit flexibility in detailed development and to provide Clients better cot certainty at early days.  For the designer, good concepts save a lot of time which might otherwise be wasted struggling to make a marginal concept work.
