In support of a design and build bid Walsh Goodfellow were appointed to rationalise the frame of a 42 storey tower in London.


Chris Bakkala prepared design criteria for evaluating the proposed tower frame, and carried out parametric studies to evaluate various alternatives for stiffness and strength distribution throughout the frame.  Commencing from a presumed minimum stiffness (Model 1) alternative stiffness arrangements were examined and effect on performance was quantified for a range of alternatives.  After 29 iterations, a scheme design was produced with more than 55% of the concrete was eliminated from the  tower shear walls, which were reduced in thickness from 0.5m to 0.2m.  Material reduction represented over  three thousand cubic metres of reinforced concrete.  The net to gross floor area was increased by 3% ,and further savings were targeted for a second phase of frame optimisation requiring architectural and mechanical coordination during detailed design stage.
